So our first assignment was to create a blog and post about our hobby. As I was trying to think of what my hobbies were, I realized I simply don't have any. I am a mish-mash of hobbies left undone. Among some of the hobbies I have tried are ballroom dancing, flower arranging, gardening, and sewing. I realized I have no rhythm, can't arrange flowers, don't like the bugs or the bending over for the gardening and can't even draw a straight line much less sew one!
Sure, I start out with good intentions but realize (after too much money spent) that I simply don't have the time or the patience to keep up the hobby I thought I wanted to do so badly. Maybe my hobby is really school, working and taking care of my family. Can that be a hobby?
Still on my list -- World Poker Tour, cake decorating, cooking classes, and skeet shooting...when I have time!
I am pretty certain that you are Pam that is my friendly neighbor!! What are the odds???? How funny!!!Your site looks great!
ReplyDeleteYour aproach to finding a hobby is way off track. Look at the things you listed as hobbies or possible hobbies. Skeet shooting is the only one listed that doesn't translate into "work". Gardening, sewing, and cooking are jobs that people hold. You should find an escape that allows you to be free from thought. On the other hand, I love to wakeboard and coach my kids in sports like football, basketball and soccer. I also work as a substitute for the school district on my days off. Both require technical thought and it can sometimes be mentally and physically demanding, but it brings me peace and solitude from the hostilities of everyday life. You must find time for a hobby!!!
ReplyDeletePam my name is Shannon Bowman and I'm in your class, I'm with you in regards to hobbies how has time. The only question I can think to ask is how many more classes do you need to complete befor you graduate?
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. I am a starter of many and a finisher of very few. Do you ever complete anything?
ReplyDeleteKevin, I suppose I find my peace in my faith and simply enjoy sitting out on my patio just being still. I wouldn't necessarily call that a hobby and don't really feel as though my life is incomplete without one. However, many people do find solace in sewing or gardening and do not consider it work so, I am sorry, but I have to disagree with you.
ReplyDeleteTRL, Thank you for the compliment! As far as completing anything, my husband has been asking that same question..lol. But yes, I complete the classes, I just don't take up the hobby. I simply don't have the time, talent or the interest. I work full time and commute 100 miles a day plus I am taking 12 hours of classes this eight weeks (total 18 this semester). Two kids and a husband and I'm spent.
ReplyDeleteShannon, I have 21 hours after this semester. I will graduate in December -- We are having a biggg party.
ReplyDeleteKimberly, this is too funny that we are in the same class! What else are you taking? Maybe I'll stop by when taking Gracie on a walk.
ReplyDeleteMy hobby is my family...It is what I do for fun in my spare time !!! BTW...what are the odds of finding a neighbor in your online class, wow!!
ReplyDeleteMy hobby is really my kids' hobby!! How do I have time for my own when they have so many!! I started coaching both my boys baseball teams in an effort to blend my hobby (sports) with their hobby (sports), and it works out well. Baseball is a family event in our house. My daughter's hobby is gymnastics though...not sure how I'm gonna swing that one. LOL!
ReplyDeleteKevin-a hobby doesn't have to be something of thoughtless effort. I scrapbook, but it is a never ending hobby that sometimes gets put away for over a year or in my case years!! Believe me a lot of "work" gets put into my pages and I love it! Pam I think the things you listed are hobbies...I've seen your new flowers you put out, and heaven knows I've smelled your cooking!! A hobby can be something that you don't do all the time or finish, but rather pick up where you may have left off when you feel you can!
ReplyDeleteOh and Gracie came over and layed on the back porch with TJ so I read them my paper for my Lifelong Learners class (poor dogs)! I only will have 14 hours left after my 16 year hiatus!!
Sarah and Pam...I think we will all be in the December graduating class!!! Woo hoo!!! Can't wait to meet all of you.
ReplyDeletePam...just sitting still is a luxury these days! I agree with you....hobbies come after graduation.
